Senator Ted Cruz believes bi-partisanship is the solution to solving the illegal immigration problem
During an appearance on Fox News’ “The Kelly File,” Tea Party Sen. Ted Cruz
(R-TX) told host Megyn Kelly that working with Democrat and Republican congressional members is the best way to fix the illegal immigration problem.
Cruz said, “We should approach immigration in a stage manner. We should start with focusing on areas of bi-partisan agreement.”
Cruz told Kelly that both sides agree that the border needs to be secured and that there needs to be an improvement to the legal immigration process.
Cruz stated, “Where is there bi-partisan agreement, on two major areas. Number one that we should do everything possible to secure the border and stop illegal immigration. And number two to improve and streamline legal immigration.”
The senator’s comments were in response to Kelly’s questions about illegal immigration. Kelly asked Cruz if he continued to believe, as he did in 2011, that there was no need to change the 14th Amendment in order to curb the illegal immigration problem.
She also asked Cruz if he would do as Trump has said he would do as president and deport illegal immigrants and their American children.
Cruz answered that the illegal immigration problem must be solved by Congress. Cruz’s answer, however, was not satisfactory to Kelly.
Kelly asked Cruz why was he so hesitant to give a direct answer to her question just as Trump had done on the “O’Reilly Factor.”
Cruz responded, “Well Megyn, what I’m doing is answering what I think Congress should do. What Congress should do, and I introduced legislation to do exactly this.
Triple the border patrol, increase four fold the fix wing and rotary wing aircraft to monitor the border. Put in place a strong biometric evidentiary system cause 40% of illegal immigration doesn’t come across the border, it’s visa over stays. Put in place a strong E-Verify system and then this final piece is critical, actually have the federal government enforce the law.”
Cruz went on to tell Kelly that he could not answer her illegal immigration questions with a “yes” or “no” answer because it didn’t get to the heart of solving the problem.
Cruz responded, “Because, because Megyn, we need to solve the problem. And the way you solve the problem is you focus where there’s bi-partisan agreement first. Once we’ve secured the border, once we’ve actually proven we can do this… then we can have a conversation.”
